China and Laos launch cross-border digital payment link

The People's Bank of China and the Bank of the Lao P.D.R. launched the China-Laos Cross-Border Digital Payment Connect in Nanning on September 18, 2026. The bilateral linkage implements a financial innovation agreement signed in June 2026.

Bilateral payment rails go live in Nanning

The People's Bank of China (PBOC) and the Bank of the Lao P.D.R. (BOL) officially launched the China-Laos Cross-Border Digital Payment Connect at a joint ceremony in Nanning, Guangxi, on September 18, 2026.

PBOC Deputy Governor Lu Lei and BOL Deputy Governor Soulysak Thamnuvong addressed the event, which was attended by central bank officials, commercial lenders, and enterprise delegates.

The cross-border infrastructure connects domestic digital payment ecosystems to facilitate bilateral trade settlements and commercial transactions between both economies.

Participating commercial banks from China and Laos will operate the payment rail under joint regulatory oversight.

From June agreement to active infrastructure

The rollout represents a concrete delivery milestone under the bilateral Memorandum of Understanding on Enhanced Collaboration on Financial Innovations, Digital Payment, and Digital Fiat Currency.

Signed in June 2026 by the Governors of the PBOC and the BOL, the framework established institutional mechanisms for technical interoperability between both jurisdictions.

The cross-border connect translates high-level political consensus between Beijing and Vientiane into operational infrastructure designed to expand regional local-currency settlement channels.

Strategic plumbing without transaction metrics

The bilateral connection advances regional payment integration along key trade routes.

Yet the central banks provide no data on clearing mechanics, transaction limits, or adoption targets.

Without commercial uptake, the system remains a geopolitical statement rather than a market shift.
