Eight banks join e-CNY system as total operators reach 30
China's digital yuan network expanded to 30 operating institutions after eight commercial banks connected to the central bank's e-CNY platform. The newly admitted lenders include joint-stock and regional institutions across mainland China.
National and regional lenders onboarded
The People's Bank of China (PBOC) connected eight commercial lenders to its official digital currency infrastructure as banking-type e-CNY operators.
The additions comprise national joint-stock commercial banks and prominent city commercial lenders: Ping An Bank, Hengfeng Bank, China Bohai Bank, Bank of Shanghai, Bank of Hangzhou, Huishang Bank, Bank of Changsha, and Guangxi Beibu Gulf Bank.
Each institution will begin offering live retail e-CNY services once technical integration and business onboarding procedures conclude.
With these additions, the total roster of authorized e-CNY operators reached 30 financial institutions across the national payments ecosystem.
Five-Year Plan anchors network scaling
The expansion reflects development targets set out in the Outline of the 15th Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development (2026-2030) for deploying sovereign digital currency infrastructure.
The central bank highlighted plans to continue admitting eligible operators in an orderly fashion under legal and market-oriented principles.
By broadening access to regional balance sheets and diverse retail client networks, monetary authorities aim to establish a competitive level playing field across public payment channels.
Broader plumbing, familiar hurdle
Expanding distribution to regional lenders deepens sovereign plumbing without solving consumer adoption friction.
Enlisting city banks widens retail touchpoints across provinces where state mega-banks face local competition.
Infrastructure grows steadily, but displacing private payment platforms remains an uphill battle.
