Consultation extended, legal basis forthcoming
The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) has extended the deadline for its 'Keeping Cash Local' consultation to July 31, 2026, following strong public interest and over 4,000 responses.
This extension allows more time for feedback and for the RBNZ to provide additional materials.
RBNZ's Karen Silk confirmed that information on the legal basis for the proposals will be released within two weeks, alongside Official Information Act responses, to assist participants in shaping their submissions.
Ensuring access, seeking broad views
The RBNZ is responsible for ensuring public access to cash services.
Karen Silk emphasized that no decisions have been made, and the RBNZ seeks diverse views on minimum local services for free cash withdrawals, deposits, and swaps across all New Zealand districts.
The central bank prefers to collaborate with banks to enhance cash access voluntarily.
Alternate consultation formats, including NZSL and braille, will be released in May to ensure accessibility for disabled people.
