Swedish cross-border payments retain scope for lower costs

Cross-border payments to and from Sweden are generally good, but costs and speed leave room for improvement, the Riksbank said on October 27, 2026. Its assessment reviews measures taken and ongoing initiatives under the G20 roadmap.

Lower costs and faster transfers

The Riksbank identifies scope to reduce costs and increase the speed of cross-border payments to and from Sweden, despite their already good overall quality.

Its assessment appears in a response to the Committee on Payments and Market Infrastructures (CPMI) and the Financial Stability Board (FSB), which leads work on the G20 roadmap.

The response describes the current state of Swedish cross-border payments, reviews measures already taken and sets out ongoing initiatives for further improvements.

The Riksbank prepared the response with input from the Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority and published the notice on October 27, 2026.

Four goals guide the roadmap

Sweden's small, open economy gives cross-border payments a particularly important role, according to the Riksbank.

Together with other relevant Swedish authorities, the bank has participated in work on the G20 roadmap from the outset.

That work aims to make payments to and from Sweden faster, cheaper, more transparent and more accessible.

The response places the assessment of existing payment quality alongside measures taken and continuing work toward those goals.

Good quality leaves room

The Riksbank's assessment distinguishes good overall payment quality from remaining gaps in cost and speed.

Its focus is further improvement rather than a change in the roadmap's goals.

The notice reports ongoing work, not a new implementation deadline.
