Swedish business sentiment rose above its historical average in August for the first time since September 2022. The Riksbank's survey of 40 companies shows strengthening household demand alongside heavy investments in defense, data centers and the energy transition.
Structural demand lifts corporate activity
The Riksbank's business survey indicator reached its highest level since February 2022, driven by higher industrial output, retail sales and corporate investment plans.
The survey covered 40 large firms employing 220,000 workers between August 20 and 31. Retailers and hospitality firms reported strong summer demand, aided by incoming foreign tourism and a temporary VAT reduction on food.
Meanwhile, corporate suppliers saw expanding order books from structural investment waves.
Demand grew sharply for products used in defense rearmament, data center construction across the Nordic region and renewable energy infrastructure, offsetting persistent weakness in residential construction and timber.
Cost pressures linger without runaway pricing
Middle East conflict drove up transport and fuel costs, while component shortages raised memory chip and aluminum prices.
Companies also adapted to 15 percent US import tariffs and new EU carbon border rules.
While B2B firms passed on cost increases to corporate buyers, retail pricing plans fell overall as grocers held prices steady.
Most firms report price changes remain normal in size and frequency.
Workforce reductions slowed, with firms focusing on efficiency gains before hiring.
Resilience replaces stagnation
