Thirteen central banks convene on digital currencies and payments

Banco de España is hosting the 10th Conference of Mediterranean Central Banks in Roda de Berà on October 1 and 2, 2026. Central bank leaders from 13 countries are meeting to address digital currencies, payment systems and foreign reserve management.

Thirteen nations at the table

The two-day conference in Roda de Berà brings together governors, deputy governors and senior officials representing central banks from 13 Mediterranean nations.

The participating institutions include monetary authorities from Albania, Algeria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Cyprus, Slovenia, Spain, France, Greece, Malta, Morocco, Montenegro, and Portugal.

The discussions focus on digital currencies, payment system modernization and reserve management practices.

Alongside central bank leaders, attendees comprise researchers from academic institutions and think tanks, financial executives, and multilateral representatives.

Multilateral coordination across borders

Organized in partnership with the OECD, the European Institute of the Mediterranean, and the Union for the Mediterranean, the event highlights regional dialogue on shared financial infrastructure.

Banco de España Governor José Luis Escrivá opened the proceedings at the bank's facilities in Tarragona, with his address broadcast publicly.

The summit provides a platform to address technical challenges spanning European Union members and neighboring economies across the Mediterranean basin.

Broad dialogue, limited operational bite

Regional dialogue between euro area and non-EU central banks is timely given diverging payments modernization.

However, informal conferences of this scale rarely produce actionable regulatory harmonization.

The event remains a networking platform rather than a catalyst for integrated monetary infrastructure.
