New Data Catalog and 2028 strategy launched in Spain

The Banco de España has launched a centralized Data Catalog and approved its 2025-2028 Data Strategy to enhance transparency and modernize statistical governance. The initiatives streamline access to economic datasets and establish formal cooperation frameworks for sustainability reporting.

Portal for economic data

The newly established Data Catalog integrates datasets from the Banco de España's statistics section and the Data Laboratory, known as BELab, into a single searchable portal.

Users can download structured data across multiple formats accompanied by detailed methodological documentation and related regulations.

This launch represents the initial phase toward a comprehensive Data Portal planned under the institution's 2030 Strategic Plan.

Concurrently, the central bank approved its 2025-2028 Data Strategy, structured around five pillars that prioritize cross-organizational governance, advanced analytics, data quality, and a culture oriented toward digital transformation.

Joint push for sustainability metrics

In institutional coordination efforts, the Banco de España and the National Statistics Institute established a technical committee to analyze environmental, social, and governance statistics under the National Statistical Plan 2025-2028.

Additionally, a long-standing cooperative body involving mercantile registrars, the accounting regulator ICAC, and the central bank continues to process financial data for over one million companies annually, maintaining high levels of automation and digital reporting via XBRL formats.

Infrastructure upgrade over innovation

These modernization efforts provide long-overdue technical plumbing for Spain's financial statistics.

While administrative consolidation improves efficiency, actual analytical breakthroughs depend on broader data accessibility.

Ultimately, structural harmonization matters more than portal aesthetics for external researchers.
