Non-cash payment operations rise 10.8 percent in H2 2025

Non-cash payment operations in Spain increased by 10.8 percent year-on-year to 10.37 billion in the second half of 2025, reaching a total value of 6.5 trillion euros, according to Banco de España data.

Cards drive volume while transfers lead value

Non-cash payment operations in Spain reached 10.37 billion transactions in the second half of 2025, marking a 10.8 percent increase compared to the same period in 2024.

Total transaction amounts grew 1.9 percent to 6.5 trillion euros, according to Banco de España statistics.

Card payments dominated by volume, accounting for 65.9 percent of all transactions with 6.83 billion operations, up 11.4 percent.

Conversely, transfers represented the largest share by value, accounting for 87.9 percent of the total amount despite comprising only 15.8 percent of transaction volume.

Direct debits and e-money operations completed the breakdown, accounting for 11.2 percent and 1.7 percent of total operations respectively.

Instant surge and expanding terminal networks

The data reveals accelerated growth in specific payment segments, particularly instant transfers initiated electronically, which surged 33.1 percent to 636 million operations with a total value of 216 billion euros.

Meanwhile, the total number of payment cards grew 10.2 percent to 126 million, maintaining an average of 2.5 cards per inhabitant, matching the euro area average.

Point-of-sale terminals increased by 10.4 percent to approximately 4.7 million units, with 95.5 percent supporting contactless technology.

Deepening digital routine

Digital transactions are deeply entrenched in everyday Spanish commerce.

The explosive growth in instant transfers points to a broader modernization of payment flows.
