AI risk citations rise to 63 percent in UK financial survey
UK financial institutions cited artificial intelligence risks at 63 percent, up 32 percentage points from the prior survey, in the Bank of England 2026 H2 Systemic Risk Survey. Geopolitical risk and cyberattacks remain the two most cited threats overall.
Artificial intelligence joins top systemic threats
In the survey of 57 financial institutions conducted between July 27 and August 24, 2026, citations for risks surrounding artificial intelligence rose by 32 percentage points to 63 percent.
This marked the highest level recorded for AI across all survey metrics.
Geopolitical risk remained the top concern, cited by 91 percent of respondents and identified as the primary risk by 47 percent, followed by cyberattacks at 75 percent.
UK economic downturn risks rose to 51 percent, while market disruption risks fell 16 percentage points to 32 percent.
Additionally, 37 percent of firms ranked AI among the most challenging risks to manage, up 26 percentage points from the first half of 2026.
Perceived event likelihood edges higher
Overall confidence in UK financial stability held steady over a three-year horizon, with 95 percent of respondents reporting confidence.
Perceived likelihood of a high-impact event increased across both horizons.
In the short term, 28 percent judged the probability as high, up 5 percentage points.
Over the medium term (1–3 years), 47 percent assessed the probability as high or very high, up from 44 percent previously.
Citations for UK political risk fell to 7 percent, while inflation risk rose to 9 percent.
A blind spot turns mainstream
The steep jump in AI risk citations reveals how rapidly technological exposure has reached executive priority lists.
While operational anxieties dominate sentiment, systemic shock absorbers across UK finance appear resilient for now.
Without clear supervisory controls, managing these digital threats will remain difficult.
