Parliament confirms Thomas Gstädtner as EBA Executive Director

The European Parliament has confirmed Thomas Gstädtner as Executive Director of the European Banking Authority following a plenary vote. Gstädtner will serve a five-year renewable term overseeing the authority's day-to-day management.

Five-year operational mandate

Following a plenary vote in the European Parliament, Thomas Gstädtner has secured official confirmation as the Executive Director of the European Banking Authority (EBA).

The appointment follows an open selection procedure in which the EBA Board of Supervisors selected Gstädtner from a candidate shortlist.

As Executive Director, Gstädtner will oversee the day-to-day management and operations of the authority for a five-year renewable term.

He takes up his duties in the coming weeks.

“Together, we will continue to promote a resilient, innovative and well-integrated European financial sector,” Gstädtner stated.

Supervisory continuity across Europe

EBA Chair François-Louis Michaud highlighted Gstädtner's supervisory background as a central asset for the authority amid structural shifts in the financial system.

Gstädtner brings extensive experience in European banking regulation and prudential supervision, having previously held senior positions focused on financial stability and regulatory policy initiatives across the European supervisory framework.

Michaud noted that this background will support the EBA in remaining trusted and effective.

Continuity over disruption

The parliamentary approval finalizes an orderly leadership transition without disrupting existing supervisory work.

By elevating a seasoned regulatory insider, the EBA prioritizes operational continuity rather than institutional reorientation.

Market participants should therefore expect steady execution of the current regulatory agenda.
