François-Louis Michaud takes helm as new Chair of European Banking Authority
François-Louis Michaud will officially assume his role as Chair of the European Banking Authority (EBA) on April 16, 2026. His appointment was formally made by the Council of the European Union and confirmed by the European Parliament.
Michaud's extensive regulatory background
François-Louis Michaud's appointment as Chair of the European Banking Authority (EBA) becomes effective on April 16, 2026.
Helmut Ettl, Vice Chair of the EBA, highlighted Michaud's extensive experience in banking supervision, regulation, and financial stability.
This expertise was gained across international, European, and national institutions in four different countries.
Ettl noted that Michaud's leadership will serve the Authority well during a particularly important time for the European financial system.
Michaud's term of office is set for five years and is eligible for one extension.
He has served as Executive Director of the EBA since September 1, 2020, and will now transition to the top leadership role.

Upon taking up his new role, François-Louis Michaud expressed his commitment to ensuring the EBA continues to deliver effective and consistent regulation and supervision across the EU.
He stated his dedication to supporting a resilient, efficient, and competitive Single Market, building on the foundations laid by his predecessors.
The selection process involved a shortlist from the EBA's Board of Supervisors and candidate interviews in January 2026.
The Council formally appointed Mr. Michaud on February 26, 2026, with the European Parliament confirming his appointment on March 10, 2026, after a public hearing.
The EBA will shortly launch the recruitment for its next Executive Director.
