Lagarde defends 25bp rate hike as energy inflation accelerates

Energy prices drive September rate increase
The European Central Bank raised its key interest rates by 25 basis points in September to ensure medium-term price stability.
Headline inflation increased to 3.2 percent in August from 2.9 percent in July, driven by a surge in energy inflation to 14.3 percent.
Core inflation edged down to 2.4 percent, while wage growth slowed to 3.3 percent in the second quarter.
Lagarde explained that the decision followed the ECB's three criteria: the inflation outlook, underlying inflation dynamics and policy transmission.
Staff projections expect GDP growth of 0.9 percent in 2026, 1.4 percent in 2027 and 1.5 percent in 2028, with inflation averaging 3.0 percent in 2026 before easing to 2.1 percent in 2028.
Corporate debt fuels technological shift
Artificial intelligence is driving roughly 25 percent of corporate credit growth in 2026, with firms devoting about 10 percent of total investment to the technology.
While over 50 percent of workers use AI in their daily tasks, only 7 percent of euro area companies have achieved significant adoption.
Lagarde highlighted market risks from highly concentrated equity valuations and rising corporate debt among AI firms.
She called for deeper integration in the Single Market and the deployment of €30 billion for European AI Gigafactories to strengthen technological capacity.
