Lane projects euro area inflation easing to 2.1 percent by 2028

ECB Executive Board member Philip R. Lane presented the September 2026 staff projections in Geneva, outlining an inflation path dropping from 3.0 percent in 2026 to 2.1 percent by 2028 as real GDP growth accelerates to 1.5 percent.

Disinflation path and growth revisions

The September 2026 ECB staff macroeconomic projections outline headline HICP inflation averaging 3.0 percent in 2026 before declining to 2.5 percent in 2027 and 2.1 percent in 2028.

Core inflation excluding energy and food is projected at 2.5 percent in 2026, 2.6 percent in 2027, and 2.3 percent in 2028.

Energy inflation drives near-term fluctuations, jumping to 9.3 percent in 2026 before easing to 1.0 percent in 2027.

Real GDP growth is expected to pick up from 0.9 percent in 2026 to 1.4 percent in 2027 and 1.5 percent in 2028, supported by resilient domestic consumption and total investment growth of 2.0 percent.

The unemployment rate is projected to edge lower from 6.2 percent in 2026 to 5.9 percent by 2028.

Financing drag and artificial intelligence trade

Tighter financing conditions continue to weigh on activity, with model simulations indicating that higher policy rates subtract up to 0.8 percentage points from cumulative GDP growth between 2026 and 2028.

Bank lending rates and corporate debt costs remain elevated across maturities.

Meanwhile, external dynamics reflect growing demand for artificial intelligence equipment, with euro area imports of core AI goods expanding 16.2 percent across 2024 and 2025.

A slow glide path with persistent energy risks

The projections assume a smooth return to the inflation target that depends heavily on energy price normalization.

Yet persistent unit labor costs and volatile commodity futures leave little margin for unexpected supply disruptions.

A sustained economic rebound remains fragile while restrictive financing continues to restrain investment.
